This course is relevant to health professional educators who teach with simulation methods.

Overview

This course addresses a range of skills relevant to the design and delivery and debriefing of immersive simulation in healthcare. Day 1 explores scenario design and delivery (for example: Pause and Discuss method and immersive scenario method); application to different settings (for example in –situ and laboratory) and program design and delivery issues.  Day 2 focuses on communication skills relevant to learning and feedback; whether used in simulation, clinical supervision or ward based learning.

Aims

To develop skills to run immersive simulation training (IST) in a range of health-care settings.

Topics covered

Day 1 focuses on:

• Getting started – the IST learning environment, briefing  and familiarizing learners for IST

• Core principles – safety, respect and the fiction contract

• Writing scenarios with a focus on clinical and behavioural learning objectives

• Delivering IST: equipment, actors, props, resources, stage management

• Debriefing and feedback basics

• Adapting to other applications and settings (in-situ)

Day 2 focuses on:

• Preparing learners for reflective conversations

• Achieving structure and engagement (empathy) in conversations

• Facilitating discussions with groups and individuals

• Giving feedback

• Promoting reflection and critical thinking

• Coaching

Topics not covered include: Training simulated patients; assessment; teaching procedural skills.

Approach

  • Participants will work in small groups with experienced clinical simulation instructors.
  • The focus on day 1 will be practice and feedback using manikin simulators, discussion and feedback
  • The focus on Day 2 will be on practicing debriefing techniques using role play and actors
  • Templates provided for: briefing checklists; powerpoints; scenarios; appraisals.

Prerequisites

Prior experience with small group learning, clinical teaching, and NHETSim program is beneficial.
