Important information about COVID-19

We recognise that completion of EMAC is a requirement of the ANZCA training program as well as a number of other assessment pathways, including Specialist International Medical Graduates applying for FANZCA and GP Anaesthetists. We will be prioritising these applicants to their preferred course date.

Please contact the SCSSC if you require EMAC to complete your training / assessment requirements in 2020 so we can assist in reserving a priority position on a future EMAC course. We can also contact you directly when course bookings resume.

  • Must be in at least second year of accredited training in Anaesthetics.


  • Completion of primary exam (if ANZCA trainee)

Course Description

The Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) course addresses clinical and non-clinical skills relevant to the effective management of anaesthetic emergencies. 


Specific Objectives

  • Understand medical error and adverse events.

  • Undertake risk assessment, exercise judgement and formulate plans, which optimise patient safety.

  • Respond rapidly in an emergency and apply systematic principles of emergency management.

  • Develop competency in procedures including: direct and indirect intubation techniques; emergency surgical airway; cardiopulmonary resuscitation; cardioversion.

  • Work effectively within a team and as a team leader.



The course is presented as five modules over 2.5 days:

  1. Human factors

  2. Airway emergencies

  3. Cardiovascular emergencies

  4. Anaesthesia emergencies

  5. Trauma
